We seem to be heading towards our goal, but every now and then we encounter unexpected obstacles. Women in particular often have to face barriers that we do not even notice at first, but which become painfully apparent over time. You are doing everything according to plan \u2013 gaining experience, improving your qualifications, achieving success. And yet, at some point, you stop in front of an invisible barrier. You can see higher positions, but you cannot reach them. This is the glass ceiling \u2013 a phenomenon that makes it much more difficult for women, despite their competence and commitment, to reach the highest levels of management. They are overlooked, not treated equally to their male colleagues and their chances are minimised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The velvet ghetto \u2013 a trap of apparent concern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018You&#8217;d be great in HR, it&#8217;s such a feminine department!\u2019 \u2013 have you ever heard a statement like this? This is an example of the so-called velvet ghetto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the guise of concern and appreciation for \u2018feminine predispositions,\u2019 we are often directed to specific departments and roles which, although important, may limit our development opportunities. HR, administration and customer service are valuable areas, but the choice of career path should be based on our competences and aspirations, not our gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sticky floor \u2013 when the start becomes the finish line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the barrier appears right at the beginning of your career. The \u2018sticky floor\u2019 is a phenomenon of \u2018sticking\u2019 to the lowest positions, often affecting women in the service, administration or trade sectors. It manifests itself in limited access to training, performing work below one&#8217;s qualifications and a lack of real prospects for promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to break out of these traps?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Awareness is the first step<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding the mechanisms that can hinder our career is the beginning of change. When we know what we are up against, we can consciously plan our actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Build a support network<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find a mentor, join networking groups, surround yourself with people who support your development. Together, it is easier to break through glass ceilings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Develop in multiple directions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t let yourself be confined to one role. Look for opportunities to gain diverse experiences, including in areas that are stereotypically \u2018male\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Communicate your aspirations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly express your professional goals and expectations. Don&#8217;t wait for someone to notice your potential. Show it to the world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, these barriers, although real, are not insurmountable. More and more organisations are recognising the problem and actively working towards professional equality. This is one of Talenti&#8217;s most important missions. You too can be part of this change.
