One of the key aspects of building effective teams is the proper support and development of female talent.

During a recent Talenti webinar, Agnieszka Czmyr-Kaczanowska, CEO and co-founder of Talenti and the Mamo Pracuj Foundation, Diversity & Inclusion expert and TEDx speaker, and Paulina Maslich – International Growth Partner at Talenti, leadership coach and HR consultant with experience on four continents, shared valuable insights on how to effectively support women in the workplace.

Current situation: challenges and prospects

Although the situation of women in the labour market is steadily improving, we still face many challenges. The statistics speak for themselves – women head only 7% of listed companies in Poland, and the pay gap in the European Union remains at around 14%, which means that women earn on average 86 cents for every euro earned by men. Experts estimate that it may take up to 132 years to achieve equal opportunities for women in our part of Europe. In addition, women still perform 75% of unpaid care work worldwide.

Business benefits of diversity

At the same time, research clearly shows that gender diversity brings measurable business benefits. Companies with greater gender diversity on their boards are 27% more likely to achieve better financial results. Even more impressive are the figures for organisations with at least three women on their boards – they achieve a 41% higher return on capital. In a broader perspective, closing the gender gap in the labour market could increase GDP by €150 billion per year.

Key areas of support: Employer branding and recruitment

To effectively support female talent, organisations should focus on several key areas. The first is employer branding and recruitment. It is crucial to create inclusive job advertisements that do not contain language that discourages women from applying. It is equally important to ensure that recruitment committees are diverse and that women are adequately represented among candidates. Organisations should also communicate their organisational culture and benefits transparently.

Development and support

Another important aspect is the development and support of female employees. Mentoring programmes dedicated to women, training in leadership and business skills, and the creation of support networks and networking groups have proven to be effective. Offering flexible working conditions that take into account the need for work-life balance is also important.

Organisational culture

An appropriate organisational culture should be the foundation of all activities. This includes regular training on diversity and bias, creating a safe and inclusive work environment, and promoting examples of women leaders in the organisation. It is particularly important to involve men in dialogue and actions to promote equality.

Good practices in organisations

Many organisations already have effective programmes in place to support the development of female talent. IBM has been committed to increasing the participation of women in technology for years, while Dell has set ambitious targets for the employment of women – 50% of employees and 40% of management. MasterCard has introduced a rule that at least one female candidate must be considered in the recruitment process for managerial positions, and Santander is implementing a global development programme for women in management positions in collaboration with the London School of Economics.

How to develop diversity?

In order to effectively support the development of female talent within an organisation, it is necessary to ensure systemic solutions at every stage of the career path, create mentoring programmes and support networks, eliminate unconscious bias in recruitment processes, and ensure transparency of remuneration and equal opportunities for development. It is also crucial to involve the entire organisation in diversity initiatives.

It is worth remembering that diversity in the workplace is not only a matter of social justice, but above all a factor influencing innovation and business performance. Investing in the development of female talent is an investment in the future of the company, which brings measurable benefits to the entire organisation.

The ongoing digital transformation, the evolution of working models and the growing awareness of the importance of diversity in the workplace are presenting organisations with new challenges.
