There was no job you wanted to return to, maybe you hadn’t worked professionally before, and now you want to be active. Before you start, realise that looking for a job is really time-consuming. So be smart and focus on employers and offers that match your priorities.

Job hunting – priorities – where to start?

Writing a CV, sending applications and finally interviews. I am not going to talk here about how to write a good CV.

I want to encourage you to think about the job you are looking for and the employer. What else matters to you besides your salary, and what conditions must your new job meet for you to be satisfied and happy?

Salary

Obviously, we work for money, and it is the main reason we go to work. Calculate how much you need to earn to make it worthwhile for you and your family. How much will your monthly costs increase if you go to work – fuel and car maintenance costs or public transport tickets, childcare, work clothes, etc.? There will be new items in your budget that you will need to earn money for. Who will look after the child and how much will it cost – a nanny, nursery, or perhaps someone from the family? Do not forget about your older child – if they have to stay longer at nursery, you will also pay more. Add up these additional costs and consider how much more you would like to earn on top of them.

Childcare costs – split them in half

Important! Regardless of how you and your husband/partner set your household budget, split the costs of childcare, at least in a symbolic and emotional sense, in half.

Do not let anyone convince you that you have to earn money for a nanny or nursery. If you are starting a family with the child’s father, both parents must be responsible for this issue.

Commuting

Also consider how far you will be commuting to your new job. If you live in a big city, travelling to the other end of it will take an hour or an hour and a half during the morning or afternoon rush hour.

It is one thing to travel 20 km for a night shift, e.g. to a hospital, or to travel to a factory at 6 a.m., but it is quite another to travel to the office at 8 or 9 a.m. when you have to drive 15 km through a congested city.

Think about whether you want to spend two or three hours a day in your car or on public transport. If you work full-time and commute a long way to work, you will be away from home for 11-12 hours. Even the coolest job can become unpleasant if it requires such a sacrifice. Besides, long commutes mean additional costs – fuel, hours to pay the nanny. Think about whether you will be able to see your child before they go to sleep, or whether you will have the energy to play with them after 12 hours away from home. As a mother, I believe that it is often better to work for less but closer to home.

When looking for a job, find out – preferably before the interview – whether the company has a home office option or the possibility of regular remote work, even if it’s only two days a week. This is often the deciding factor for parents when choosing one job offer over another.

Business trips when you have a small child

Daily commutes to work are one thing, but occasional trips to clients, for example, are another. Think about whether this suits you and whether you want to go on business trips from time to time (find out what this means in practice). Will it be a reward for you and a nice change from working in the office, and will you be happy to change your surroundings, or, on the contrary, will you treat it as an unpleasant duty and avoid such trips? Therefore, consider whether it is worth responding to an advertisement in which the employer requires a willingness to travel frequently on business.

It is not worth lying during the interview that business trips are your element if this is not the case. You may be able to hide something from your employer during the interview, but the truth will surely come out soon, and then what? If you are not available, contrary to your earlier enthusiastic assurances, neither you nor your employer will be satisfied, and your cooperation will probably end quickly.

A job that matches your education and interests

It’s great if you can find a job related to your education, experience or interests. Looking for a job that doesn’t interest you at all is like doing yourself a disservice. It’s nice to go to work and think to yourself, ‘I wonder what today will bring?’ A job that matches your interests makes you want to go to work, work with commitment, and thus prove that you are perfectly suited for it.

Working hours – the best for working mums

The last factor worth mentioning is working hours. Will the employer agree to a flexible schedule?

Or maybe you can convince your boss to let you do some of your duties from home? The possibility of flexible forms and hours of work is one of the most important factors for women in facilitating their employment.

Prepare a list of pros and cons

If you have doubts about whether a particular offer is right for you, give yourself time to think it over. Write down all the pros (e.g. good salary, flexible working hours, opportunities for development) and cons (e.g. long commutes, frequent business trips) on a piece of paper. Weigh up the ‘gains’ and ‘losses’ and make a decision. It may be worth discussing it with someone close to you – your partner or a friend? Their objective assessment and perspective will help you make the right decision.

I hope I haven’t discouraged you from actively looking for a job. Rejecting a few seemingly good offers that would quickly lead to disappointment will pay off in the long run, allowing you to focus on finding your dream job.

It is important to know what you are looking for and what your priorities are. Why waste time and energy on interviews with companies you do not want to work for?

What should a mother keep in mind when she starts looking for a job?
