Perhaps you have already had an initial telephone interview with the recruiter. Now it’s time for the job interview! We talk about this extensively during our Mamo Pracuj online course, but I have summarised the most important areas below.

Keep these few useful things in mind:

1. Get to know your potential employer and recruiter

I encourage you to find out exactly what the company does and what its values are before sending your CV or filling out the application form. Before the interview, be sure to find time to visit the company’s website and check out the ‘Careers’ tab, where you will usually find not only job advertisements, but also the most important information about the company. See if they target their message to employees who are parents.

Check out how the organisation presents itself on social media. Visit their LinkedIn or Facebook profile. See what projects they are working on and what is currently most important to them. Think about where you see yourself among the various activities of the company. You can also look for opinions about the employer you are going to interview with. Perhaps someone among your contacts on business profiles works there. Ask for their opinion.

Visit the business profiles of the recruiter you will be interviewing with. Remember – recruiters are people too. See what experience, professional history and competences they have. Get to know them, and be sure to remember the name of the person you will be meeting with.

2. Prepare your CV and take a look at the advertisement you responded to

Bring your CV and references, if you have them. Recall what was most important in the job advertisement, what your potential employer cared about most. Think about how and where you used the skills listed in the candidate profile. Recall specific tasks, events and your actions.

The recruiter may ask you to tell a story related to a specific event in your professional life, your actions, difficult and stressful events, successes or conclusions you have drawn if there were any problems. In other words, they will ask behavioural questions – review your employment history and prepare this information in advance. Do not let yourself be caught off guard!

3. Bring a notebook and something to write with

You will be able to note down the most important things during the interview and write down the questions you want to ask. A job interview can be a stressful event for you. To make sure you don’t forget the most important aspects, you can write them down and calmly refer to your notes during the interview.

4. Prepare your outfit the day before and familiarise yourself with the route

Remember to dress in business style. Try on your outfit and see how you feel in it. If something is uncomfortable, find another outfit. Do not let anything distract you. Choose clothes that make you feel confident. Do not wear high heels if you have not worn them in a long time. If you wear trousers every day, you do not have to force yourself to wear a knee-length skirt – choose what you feel comfortable in.

Take some time to plan how you will get there. Take rush hour into account, regardless of whether you are travelling by car or public transport. Leave a little earlier so you won’t be late. If anything causes you to arrive after the agreed time, inform the recruiter.

5. Bring a good mood and a positive attitude

A job interview is a meeting between two parties who expect something from each other and want to present themselves well. Increasingly, such meetings are very collaborative, and you can also ask questions. Before the interview, listen to your favourite song or read an excerpt from a book that is important to you. Do anything that puts you in a good mood before meeting with the recruiter.

The better you prepare for the meeting, the calmer you will be

Author:

Anna Łabno-Kucharska

What should I know before meeting with an employer?
