This mainly concerns portals such as LinkedIn and Goldenline and, to a lesser extent, Facebook. They are often the first source of information about the existence of a candidate or, if the recruitment project is carried out through an advertisement, a place where the recruiter can verify information about the candidate.

Not just a CV

Our social media profile is, of course, primarily a source of information about our employment history, education, language skills, hard skills and certifications. However, it would be a mistake to treat it as a place where we simply post our CV. It is actually an extremely important tool for creating our image. How we want to be perceived in the job market and whether we can be perceived as experts.

It is also a key tool that allows us to build a network of contacts, thanks to which we can lend credibility to our activities and ourselves. Here, recruiters can easily access recommendations. By participating in discussion groups on professional topics or recommending other people, we give others the opportunity to see our competences and become more visible.

Consistency

It is worth ensuring consistency – our actions in ‘real life’ should be reflected in our profile and vice versa. If we are building our brand as a serious advisor and coach, and we post a photo from a family party on LinkedIn, wearing a low-cut dress, it undermines our image and means that recruiters will not take us seriously. Conversely, if a recruiter comes across an interesting candidate on a social networking site who, according to their profile, is a mature and experienced specialist in their field, and then a person with no specific expectations and a chaotic attitude comes to the meeting, their image will also be undermined.

Creating a profile

When creating your profile on LinkedIn or Goldenline (Facebook is still a more private portal and recruiters rarely visit it for verification purposes), it is worth thinking about keywords that are relevant to your career path and make it easier for recruiters to find you. It is worth entering, for example, the area you work in under your name and surname, or, if your profile is unambiguous and you have been doing the same job for years, your job title – a recruiter entering specific words into a search engine is more likely to find you.

In addition to dry facts such as years of experience, job title and company name, it is also worth listing our most important tasks in sub-points. Not all positions are equal, and such additions are a great way to highlight our core competencies. We can also use the interesting feature of highlighting specialisations (GoldenLine) or skills (Skills – LinkedIn).

LinkedIn and Goldenline are also very helpful tools in the job search. More and more companies are creating their own profiles on these portals and posting job advertisements on them. In addition, by using our network of contacts, we can independently reach out to people who may be responsible for filling positions in companies that interest us. Let us not be afraid to be proactive – such actions will not be perceived negatively. On the contrary, they may present an opportunity for an interesting offer, if not now, then perhaps in the future.

Where to start?

Registering on both portals is extremely simple. Then it is worth observing – check out other people’s profiles, see what you like and dislike about them, think about what information about yourself should be visible, what is key in your experience and what you want to highlight. Choose a suitable photo. And, of course, develop your contacts – start with friends, acquaintances, work colleagues, then think about headhunters or people with whom you have had professional contact in the past. You will see that your network of contacts will quickly grow!

You don’t have to create your entire profile at once, you can do it in stages or change it gradually. The important thing is to have an online presence – in today’s world, this is extremely important, and in the job search process – it is simply a must.

* According to recent research conducted by LHH DBM.

Author:

Katarzyna Radecka

As many as 97% of Polish recruiters use social media in their work, and almost 80% of them have hired an employee with the help of social media*.
