Or maybe not yet? You’ve probably heard that today’s job seekers use LinkedIn to find jobs, and that it’s worth having a profile there… but you just don’t have the time to perfect it? Take these four steps, for starters!

LinkedIn account – first steps

Do you have a profile? Go to the next point. If not, set one up now!

A profile on LinkedIn is free, so it costs you nothing and you can gain a lot. At the end of the article I’ll give you links to other incredibly interesting texts about LinkedIn 😉.

Create an account!

Now, let’s get started. You won’t build a perfect profile right away. It takes time, but you have to start somewhere! So here we go:

1. A public profile and the URL

Two important matters to be dealt with in one swift move. Firstly, make sure your profile is public. If it remains private, no recruiter will be able to view your profile. You can change this in the settings → view your profile and in the top right section, you will find the option: “Edit public profile and url” → click it and set the profile to public.

Secondly, you can also change your profile url in the same place. The idea is that your profile address should not have a series of random digits, assigned randomly by the system, but rather your data. Mine is: agnieszka-czmyr-kaczanowska.

You can give the full link, or just its abbreviation: ‘in/agnieszka-czmyr-kaczanowska’ as the address to your LinkedIn profile, for example, in your CV, in your email footer, on your business cards.

This way it is also easier for others to find you, as this address is unique. There is no other person with the same address. If you have a popular first and last name, you may have to fiddle around a bit.

But remember, don’t use nicknames, funny names or diminutives here. It has to be professional.

2. The headline and #ONO

One of the most relevant parts of your LinkedIn profile that should be completed is the ‘headline’. Where can you find it? Exactly under your name. If you don’t fill this in, your most recent job title will automatically appear, and this may not be beneficial. It will prove much more beneficial and more effective if your areas of professional interest appear there, or the industry you want to work in/where you work/where you are looking for a job.

Why? It’s because of these keywords in headlines that LinkedIn profiles can be searched, which recruiters eagerly take advantage of. So if you want recruiters in the finance industry to find your profile, then type in: finance, accounting or audit. Use words that describe your interests, and make sure they are simple and intuitive enough for a recruiter to have a chance of finding you.

You can separate them with dashes, as it is in my case (I also picked it up somewhere), there can be commas or other characters.

The headline is also the place where you can write: #ONO = “open for new opportunities”, or in Polish #PNW = “I’m looking for new challenges” to signal that you are looking for work.

These hashtags are just used to show that you are looking for a job. You can also indicate this in your profile by clicking a check box in your settings.

3. The summary on your LinkedIn profile

This is the perfect place to showcase yourself and what you do, what interests you and what kind of person you are. It’s a kind of an “elevator speech”. You can describe your experience briefly, but in a more descriptive and interesting manner. If you’re a salesperson, this is the perfect place to describe what you’ve achieved, if you’re a trainer, how many hours of training you’ve done, etc. Each of you will find something of your own. You have 2,000 characters (with spaces) to use and a great opportunity to make a case for yourself.

I encourage you to look at the profiles of others who have this section very well-prepared. I always recommend the following profiles:

Katarzyna Młynarczyk

Łukasz Dębski

Jacek Krajewski

Bartek Ziemiański

Joanna Tarnawska-Durda

4. A good profile photo and background photo

The last of the four points, however very important still. Profiles with photos on LinkedIn receive up to 14 times more views than profiles without a photo.

It is also equally important that it is a good quality photo, where you look nice and feel that way, too. It shouldn’t be a private holiday photo (unless the frame “doesn’t give it away”) or a photo with someone else. It needs to be yours. If you don’t have one that is suitable, take care of it. More and more companies provide professional photography services on LinkedIn, and I’m sure you have a friend of a friend who has a good camera and takes great photos. Ask her for help!

On your LinkedIn profile, you can also add a so-called “background photo'”, i.e. a background picture. Its dimensions are: 1584 by 396 px (it must be of good quality, but no larger than 8MB). You can use it to show what you are interested in, show something pretty, such as mountains or flowers, to make it nice to look at your profile. See what others are posting and find your inspiration.

Once you have these four elements set up, it’s time to tackle describing your experience, recommendations and skills. There is plenty of room to make a case for yourself here, too!

Author:

Agnieszka Czmyr-Kaczanowska

Title photo: Canva

Do you have a profile on LinkedIn, that you rarely look at?
