Guides on how to write a CV can really be found a dime a dozen online. But what about how not to write a CV? There is a handful of important points that you won’t find in standard guides. See if you know them all already!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s start with what the information to include in a CV.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every CV should contain basic personal details (name, town) and contact details (e-mail, telephone number). However, you do not need to include information on your marital status, nationality, number of children or your full address<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Important!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Recruiters often copy the email address from your CV into their databases, so don’t alter the character continuity of your email address, don’t include any extra characters (sometimes an extra space added for aesthetic reasons can result in an email being sent to the wrong email address). There is nothing worse than being informed after some time has passed that a recruiter could not contact you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pandemic has turned the rules of remote working upside down. That’s why it’s a good idea to specify in your CV which mode of work you prefer. Remote, hybrid or perhaps on site? Are you willing to relocate? These are questions that are bound to be relevant to employers, even at the CV stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CV with or without photo?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A photo can be helpful but it is not mandatory. It is actually up to you whether you add it or not. If you decide to do so, make sure it is appropriate to the seriousness of the document, professional, up-to-date and of good quality. Avoid selfies, group photos, pictures from your holiday or cropped photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experience or education?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Which is more important? Which to put first? The rule is very simple. When you are just starting out in your career and have little experience, place the Education section before Experience. On the flip side, when your education is not necessarily in line with the position you are applying for, or you have a great deal of professional experience, then highlight Experience first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What else is worth taking care of in this section?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  • remember about inverted chronology – the most recent position\/school should be at the top;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • don’t limit yourself to the title only (add a few bullet points with the job’s description);<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • use months in time frames (because what can you think when you read that person X worked at company Y in the years 2019-2020? It could be either 01.2019 – 12.2020 (almost 2 years of experience) or 12.2019 – 01.2020 (1 month of experience). Do you see the difference? 🙂<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    What about our strengths?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    It is important that we include the strengths that our potential employer cares about. Dividing them into two groups is usefull: hard skills (measurable, acquired through a learning process) and soft skills (psycho-physical, social). When you mention language skills, specify the level (in speech and in writing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Profile summary – is it necessary?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    A profile summary or a career summary (various names for it are in circulation) is nothing more than a short text (4-5 sentences), in which you try to convince your potential employer that you are the one they should hire. It’s not mandatory, but it can be really helpful. Think of it as a business card that showcases your core competences, motivations and career goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Should you write about your interests?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    It certainly won’t hurt, and it may be of help. You may find it working as an “icebreaker” to establish common ground with the recruiter. It is important that this information in your CV is truthful. It is not a great idea listing Czech literature here just because you know one book by Milan Kundera. You might end up with a passionate Czech philologist who won’t fail to check whether you actually have something to say on the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Appearance, layout, structure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    A CV has to be legible and aesthetically pleasing – those are the basics. No superfluous graphics or over-the-top fonts (unless you’re applying for a position in the creative industry, in which case you can have a tad more fun with it). In what language should it be? Apply a simple rule of thumb: if you are responding to an advertisement that was published in English, write your CV in English. If the ad was in Polish – then your CV should be in Polish. Unless, of course, the employer has explicitly provided guidelines on this in the advertisement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Important!<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    If you see an advertisement in English for a position with French, do not send your CV in French. Recruiters do not need to know the language to look for people with knowledge of it, but they do need to understand your CV 🙂<\/p>\n\n\n\n
