How to prepare well?

Everyone who has been through a job interview probably knows how stressful it can be, especially if it’s the first one in a long time and it’s for a job you care about.

Before we meet our potential employer, it is a good idea to prepare for such a meeting – this will minimise stress, make us feel more confident, and increase our chances of presenting our skills well.

What should we keep in mind before the meeting? Here’s a list of the most important items:

1. Do you know what position you will be interviewing for? If you don’t remember, be sure to check the ad or job description before the meeting. A situation where the Candidate is not sure what position they are applying for is unacceptable. If you are actively looking for a job and are sending out dozens of CVs, keep a record of offers, keep emails in separate folders, in a nutshell, do something that will allow you to quickly check the details of a particular recruitment process.

2. Figure out the route to the meeting in advance – perhaps the company is in a hard-to-reach place or there is construction work on the main access road and you need to plan your route differently. Punctuality is incredibly important, it is better to be a few minutes early and wait than to run stressed out to a meeting at the last minute and arrive as breathless as if you have just run a marathon.

3. Make sure you also know who you will be speaking to and what that person’s role is within the company. For example, is it a recruitment specialist or perhaps your potential boss? Information about your interviewer should be provided at the time of the invitation, if it is not the case, ask about it.

4. Be sure to read the employer’s profile, visit their website, read about what the company does, what their current projects are. A candidate who knows something about the company is perceived completely differently than a candidate who is not interested in it at all. If you have familiarised yourself with the company’s profile, it shows that you are motivated, that you care about the job, and that you can be a committed employee. Besides, it is possible that you have already worked for a company in the same sector and this fact will be a very good starting point in the interview, which will simultaneously allow us to highlight relevant experience, consistent with the expectations of the potential employer.

5. Before the meeting, answer the very important question: why am I interested in this company and this position? This question is bound to be asked at the meeting, so it’s worth preparing for it. Is it about the company – because we’ve always dreamed of working there? And if so, why? Or are we ideally suited to the employer’s requirements? If so, why? The more facts we provide and link them to our skills, the better chance we have of convincing the other party to be on our side. Let’s use this question to demonstrate our motivation to work for this particular company.

6. Look at your CV again in terms of this particular offer. Which of your competences match the requirements of the potential employer? What are your strengths that you can mention? Think of specific situations when your skills put to use that can be of interest to this particular company. Make sure you also remember the details of your employment history.

7. Pay attention to the dress code – during a job interview, take good care of your appearance and adapt it to the situation. Maybe save jumpers, jeans, very short skirts or strong make-up for other occasions?

8. Think about what you want to ask during the meeting – this is a very good opportunity to dive deeper and clarify things. Are you sure you understand the responsibilities associated with the position? What expectations does the potential employer have? Do you know what the team looks like and who you will be working with? It’s also worth asking about the recruitment timeline and when you can expect feedback.

9. Be prepared to be asked about your expected salary, ideally in the form of brackets. Indicate whether you are looking for a contract of employment or perhaps a B2B contact. If this information hasn’t been communicated already, ask about bonuses and benefits.

10. Remember to smile, be positive and maintain eye contact during the conversation. Your statements should be coherent and longer than words put together in a haste. Our interlocutor should feel that they are talking to a competent and cultured person. Remember, this is your only chance to convince the other party, so make the most of it!

Good luck!

author: Katarzyna Radecka

Do you have a job interview ahead of you?
