The more you do today, the smoother the return to professional life will be

So starting today, make your partner aware (unless, of course, you’ve always done so) that shopping doesn’t jump into the fridge all by itself, socks don’t have a self-cleaning function and your baby wakes up at night, and quite often at that.

Distribution of responsibilities

Prepare a list of responsibilities and distribute them fairly. Be consistent. Demand. Give words of affirmation. After a while, you will appreciate your own efforts and it will be much easier to return to work because you won’t have a second full-time job at home.

The sooner you find a suitable nursery, nanny, kindergarten etc. the better. Approximately two months before you plan to return, it is a good idea to start bringing your child to the nursery already.

Both you and your child will get used to the new situation. Why would you need the new experiences to accumulate and build up on the first day you return work?

I assure you that you will already have enough entertainment, as it is. An added bonus, of course, is some time just for yourself, which you need so much even before you get caught up in the whirlwind of work.

The employer and returning to work

If you expect your employer to behave fairly towards you, I believe you should also be fair to your employer. Inform them from the beginning about your plans: how long you are planning your maternity leave to be, whether you will be taking parental leave etc.

These are important matters for the employer to be able to organise work in the company during your absence and plan for any possible substitutions and the costs involved, as well as for your return.

This matter is also important for you to make sure that your position is still waiting for you to come back. The best way to do this is through sincere and fair dialogue between both parties.

Keep up to date

Are you anxious that after a year with your baby you won’t have any other topics to talk about, other than poo and porridge (honestly – I think your colleagues are anxious about that too)

So, don’t let yourself fall out of the loop. Try, for your own pleasure and balance, to reach for trade press regularly, attend conferences, symposiums, training etc.

Subscribe to industry newsletters etc. This will require little effort and will bring many benefits – not only will you keep up to date with your profession, but you will also prevent the so-called “diaper brain inflammation” 😉 When you return to work, you will surprise everyone with a fresh outlook and new ideas.

Keep in touch with colleagues, go with them to after-work meetings, Christmas Eve gatherings, etc. Ask to have your email added to the company newsletter. That way you’ll keep your finger on the pulse and you won’t miss a single thing. When you return to work, there will be far fewer surprises.

Responsibilities and privileges

The formalities to be completed before return are, first of all, to notify your employer of your intention to return to work well in advance – at least 30 days before your planned return. It is also worth considering flexible working hours.

As a parent, you are entitled to an extra 2 days off during the year for so-called childcare, and you have the right to refuse to work overtime (you will be given an appropriate form from Human Resources).

If you are breastfeeding, you are entitled to an extra break included in your working time, and you do not need to provide a doctor’s certificate that you are breastfeeding, but if your employer has any doubts, they may ask you for one.

Take care of yourself

Preparing for your return to work started off by involving your partner in the process, so now it’s time for you. This will be a more enjoyable and much easier task. It’s time for a new set of clothes, a new hairstyle and nails. After all, you can’t go back to work with patchy hair dye and in leggings, can you? After all, whether you agree with it or not: they write about you as they see you.

So, just as consistently as you expected your partner’s participation in household and parenting duties, now set the expectations for yourself – it’s time for shopping and a hairdresser! I said it before it would be more enjoyable, didn’t I?

If you approach your return to work as a task you will dilligently complete, you will return to work with a head full of ideas, well-groomed, happy and reassured about your child. What’s more, you’ll be a role model and hope for other women that it is possible to combine motherhood and work.

I’m not saying it will be easy, but it can be done, right? Because who, if not you – Mom – is supposed to manage?

Author: Anna Łopuchin

Returning to work after having a baby does not have to be a difficult and stressful experience for you.
