What is it, how does it work and how can you benefit?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m sure you are familiar with the feeling when you don&#8217;t quite know what to do in a professional situation. When emotions subside, you may think: &#8216;If only I had known this earlier&#8230;&#8217;. The past cannot be changed, but think how much you could learn from a mentor now. It is worth remembering that it is a two-way relationship, and the mentor also learns from the mentee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is mentoring and what is its purpose?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Polish branch of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC), the definition is: <em>mentoring is voluntary assistance given by one person to another, independent of professional hierarchy, so that they can make significant progress in their knowledge, professional work or way of thinking.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mentoring is a process in which the more experienced person (the mentor) provides support and shares their experience with the mentee. This allows the mentee to achieve educational, professional and personal goals. The key, therefore, is for a partnership to develop between the mentor and the mentee, which may encompass many different contexts, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>preparation for a promotion,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>decision-making,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>effective communication,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>building one&#8217;s personal brand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The ultimate goal of the mentoring process is the mentee&#8217;s development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Role of the mentor and tasks of the mentee<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A mentor should possess a high level of knowledge and be able to pass it on to others. The mentor shares their experience, gives advice and allows the mentee to see a wider professional perspective. How does it look in practice? The mentor explains the mentee&#8217;s career development goals and sets up a plan to achieve them by sharing his or her experience and knowledge gained during their own career. The mentor not only shares successes, but also tells about projects that did not end in success. This allows the mentee to learn from others&#8217; mistakes. In addition, the mentor facilitates networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mentee is not a passive recipient of the process, their task is to prepare thoroughly for the meetings. The mutually agreed goal should be based on the mentee&#8217;s needs. It is worth remembering that the mentee also brings a lot into the relationship, i.e. their own resources and experiences. Mentoring is a two-way process. The mentee not only benefits and takes, but also shares what they knows. Even if the process is unconscious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do you find a mentor?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This task requires forward thinking and planning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider what your <strong>career goal<\/strong> is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show a proactive attitude and l<strong>ook for development\/mentoring programmes<\/strong> that various institutions offer. This will enable you to connect and network with experts in your fields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search for <strong>subject-matter-oriented groups on LinkedIn and Facebook<\/strong> where you can find knowledge and contacts. Be active there &#x1f642;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build your <strong>personal branding on LinkedIn<\/strong>, that is look after your network of contacts, publications and reactions. You don&#8217;t have to start with big things, use the &#8220;baby steps&#8221; method, i.e. comment on profiles, like news. It&#8217;s also worth taking a look at our resources on building your brand on LinkedIn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Attend industry events offline and online<\/strong>. This will not only broaden your knowledge and help you find your way around the industry, but it will also help you meet experts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you can afford it, <strong>enroll in a postgraduate course<\/strong>. In this situation, you have easier access to potential mentors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider <strong>who among your friends may know the role model<\/strong> you are following. If possible, ask them to introduce you to this person.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How is mentoring different from coaching?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the most frequently asked questions. Mentoring and coaching are developmental processes and they are both similar in some ways. They take place based on a partnership(there are no firm commands, orders, etc.), and both support the mentee in gaining autonomy. So where does the difference stand?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Differences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mentoring is a long-term process, while coaching is geared towards a short period of time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When it comes to the mentor, there are no specific qualifications requiredfor this activity, but it is good to have completed mentoring training. The coach should have relevant certifications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mentoring involves a slightly more directive approach than coaching, as the mentor shares their knowledge, experience and skills. In fact, they are something of a guide for the mentee in a particular industry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mentoring is more informal, more conversational in nature than coaching (the latter is more structured).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a mentoring relationship, mentors rely heavily on their professional and life experience. Coaching does not neccessarily require knowing the client&#8217;s profession.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feedback is two-way &#8211; it is given not only by the mentor, but also by the mentee to the mentor.
