“I want to start looking for a new job, but in a different position to my most recent professional experience. Should we present work experience in chronological order, or can I establish the order myself?” – you asked us recently.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A recruiter replies:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Presenting our experience in chronological order from the most recent at the top to the oldest at the bottom makes it the most readable for the recipient, i.e. the recruiter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is usually the case that our most recent experience says the most about us, shows the most complex competencies and skills we have acquired. That’s why we put them at the top, because that’s what the person reading our CV will pay attention to first. The chronological order also shows how we developed our career path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if we have a variety of past jobs that are not chronologically linked?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are exceptions when we have many different experiences or projects we have been involved in, but which are not a consequence of one another. It is a good idea to group them together and present them according to the area, e.g. sales (include sales-related positions and projects here), marketing (include marketing-related positions and projects here), project management (include positions related to this area).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Present these areas in your CV starting with the one that interests you the most and is most consistent with the position you are applying for, all the way to the one that interests you the least. However, when presenting your experience this way create no more than 3-4 areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
