Think of this section as a summary – if someone who is looking for an employee wants a summary, this is where you describe what you are really good at as a potential candidate, what you have experience in, what you are proud of professionally etc.

featured|recommended – did you know that even if you don’t have any of your publications (posts or articles) on LinkedIn you can still highlight, for example, a photo of you speaking at a conference, or an award, or an external link? This section is worth looking after, as it makes you more credible in the eyes of a potential employer. Think about what you want to show off/share that can make you stand out from other candidates?

activity – activity on LinkedIn would make a great subject for a Ph.D. dissertation, but if writing your own posts and publications is not your cup of tea, then focus on building your visibility in other ways. Like, comment, share others’ posts – take a strategic approach here. It’s not about sitting down in front of the TV and scrolling through LinkedIn for 5 minutes giving an absent-minded “like” and a meaningless “Thanks” comment or anything of this sort. Remind yourself of the purpose of your presence on LinkedIn, think about the industry or area of work that interests you – focus your activity on the kind of posts that you see when you go on LinkedIn.

experience – focus on naming your positions properly here; for your current and most recent role, add a brief summary of what you were responsible for and your successes. You can also summarise your past experience in 1 or 2 sentences. If you are falling short of time, focus on your current and most recent position. If you are still at the university/college stage, then just include the projects you actively participate in.

education – list the certificates and diplomas that are actually relevant to the job you are seeking.

skills and recommendations – a priority section, like the headline, where you can “let a new job find you”. What skills would a recruiter be looking for? If you actually have these skills – include them in your profile. It is very important to carefully reflect on which 3 skills you want to highlight in the top 3 (always visible on your profile). Remember to ask your friends, colleagues, clients, former boss (if you have a good relationship with them :)) for endorsements of your skills. Or even better, written recommendations!

achievements – you don’t have to fill in everything in this section, but the absolute minimum is languages. You can also add projects you want to show off, volunteering or organisations that you have been active in.

interests – don’t miss this section! It’s easy to overlook because LinkedIn itself suggests your interests based on the information you fill in. But if you put it in your CV that you are interested in business, then you may want to consider adding some trade magazines or your business gurus active on LinkedIn? If you are looking for a job in the HoReCa or pharmaceutical industry, for example, think about which companies are worth following. This way you get valuable inspiration, business and company news, but you also make it credible yet again that this topic, this industry actually interests you.

If you want to find a job via LinkedIn then your task for the next few weeks is to update your profile so that it is effective, i.e. appears in recruiters’ searches and encourages them to contact you when you apply via LinkedIn for a position.

Good luck!

Author: Paulina Maslich

HR consultant, leadership trainer, career and business coach, co-owner of the consulting and training company https://dotway.com/pl/ .
